Our History

In 1984, two women met at a hospice volunteer training program.
They discovered a mutual dream. Each wanted to begin a community center.
Nancy Rez, the nurse, wanted to begin a wellness resource center where professional practitioners including herself, could offer integrative, holistic therapies to the community. She knew from experience that people needed self-care tools to complement their treatments and medicine within the western allopathic medical model.

Nancy
Mary Lu Coughlin, a teacher with 20 years experience, wanted a center, an open space and bookstore, where people would feel welcome to bring up issues and questions of human concern for research and exploration. She imagined a place for lifelong education in the true sense of the word - people leading each other to greater understanding, acceptance and love of themselves and their world.
In 1986, these two women found the house of their dreams for rent at 540 West Broadway. A circle of friends who were inspired by the book The Possible Human, by Jean Houston, joined in helping make the house welcoming and comfortable. That delightful group energy became playfully known as the “The Founding Mothers”.
The upstairs bedrooms became rental spaces for private practitioners. The dining room became the bookstore. The living room with its fireplace served as the community gathering room. The back garage became the perfect open space, with big, grey metal doors that when lifted up allowed all kinds of events to take place.
Rather than go on at this point, come and visit. We are always happy to greet new folks and share the many stories. Please continue checking out our web site to learn about current programs, classes and coming events.
We hope to see you soon.
